The PCHA has been
active in the community since 1958 with players from ages 4 to age 20
enjoying the sport of hockey. We
have grown rapidly in recent years to the current level of almost 1,000
registered players playing on our 64 teams. The demand for player
registrations are at an all time high. Registration is open to both male
and female players at all skill and age levels. A player must be able to
skate to register at age 4, however from age 5 and older, skating
ability is desirable but not necessary.
Our Port Credit Storm teams participate in the Mississauga Hockey
League, which has eight member Associations covering all areas within
the city of Mississauga. The
majority of teams at Port Credit (54) are at the house league level,
practice once a week, and play 1-2 games per week or about 26
games per season. The competitive Gold and 'A' level teams (10) play
about 2
times per week for a total of 34 games per season, and also have one
association practice a week. All players ages 7 to 20 registered with
the Port Credit Storm participate in games against the other seven MHL
Associations.
PCHA has a very well
established ' Pre-Tyke ' program (the Paperweights) for players ages 4,
5 & 6. Our 'Paperweight
' Program provides one 50-minute practice and one 50-minute game for
the paperweight teams each week. The games utilize the entire ice
surface, with timed 3-minute shifts, to ensure equal playing time for
all players. The games have two referees who use standard OHA rules
(with the exception of no icing calls). Each player is evaluated
according to skill level and plays on a 'shift' against a line of
similar skill level from the opposing team.
The Paperweight teams for the 2004-05 season were the Leafs, Canadiens,
Sharks, Panthers, Black Hawks, Flyers, Bruins and Predators. Players are provided with a replica NHL uniform (jersey and
socks), which are personalized with each player’s name on the back.
All players in the
PCHA keep their team jersey at the end of the season, and receive a team
and individual photo as a season memento.
Young players from the paperweight to Atom levels also receive an
individual trophy at the annual Players Banquet in the spring of each
year.
Local businesses and other community-interested companies generously
provide funds to PCHA through sponsorship donations.
These sponsorships are used to offset the cost of team uniforms.
Each team proudly wears their sponsor’s name on the back of
each jersey. The
registration fees paid by the players covers the cost of ice rental for
team practices, sweaters, socks, insurance, etc., while the gate fee charged to players and spectators at
each MHL game pays for the ice and game officials for each game.
