City of Mississauga launches Port Credit Memorial Arena Anniversary
Website
The City of Mississauga has plans for a
memorable year of celebration as our Arena turns 50. Visit the
Port Credit
Arena webpage, click on the Port Credit Memorial Arena banner on the

History NEEDED!
Were you a member (player, coach or parent)
of the PCHA at a time that history was made? Did you start your hockey
life with Port Credit and then, later, star in the NHL? Or the Beer
Leagues? Your humble webmaster shattered his ankle behind the net at the
south end of the arena and, decades later, remembers how careful the
ambulance attendants were to bang my foot on every vertical
obstacle between the ice and the ambulance.
We want your stories! Please email
50th@portcredithockey.com
if you can help.
Port Credit Hockey memories
We received the following letter
as the first submission , and we could not have asked for a
better example of what we're hoping you'll send us - thanks Jimmy!
By the way - this letter was published in
The Mississauga News,
another great source of anniversary news.
My name is
Jimmy Hatten and I have a nice Port Credit Hockey story.
I was born and raised in Port
Credit and the town will always have a very special
place in my heart, not only the town itself but my
experiences playing Hockey there.
It all started when I was very
young, at age 3 and 4 years old I was a loyal Detroit
Red Wings fan and when I first started skating it was on
the Credit River in front of the Port Credit Arena.
When my
father decided to register me in the Port Credit
Paperweight Little NHL(1966-1967) at Port Credit arena I
was amazed to find out that I would be playing for the
Detroit Red Wings and to make things even more exciting
I wore the number of my favorite Hockey player Gordie
Howe(#9).
I have many memories playing
in the paperweight little NHL and the fondest would be
when I made the Port Credit Paperweight All star team.
There were many great young players on this team... we
had Mike Sands in net who played for team Canada in 1982
and eventually signed with the Minnesota North Stars in
the NHL. I also enjoyed playing with a young Greg
Gilbert who went on to a very successful career in
hockey both playing and coaching. He played in the NHL
for N.Y. Islanders, Chicago, N.Y. Rangers and St. Louis.
Greg ended his career with 3 Stanley Cups. Most of
the other members of that team ended up playing Jr B, Jr
A, College, AHL and in Europe respectively. A great cast
of characters for sure.
As for me after paperweight,
my years were spent mostly in the MTHL winning a City
Championship with the Mississauga Terriers in 1980 and
later playing Jr. for the Dixie Beehives. My last season
of competitive Hockey was by far the most enjoyable. I
finished my long Hockey career with the only team that
played out of Port Credit Arena as their home rink and
allowed me to relive some of the fond memories from my
childhood. I came home and played my last season for the
Port Credit Titans OHA Jr B squad. I had started and
finished my Hockey career in the best Hockey town in the
world......Port Credit.
