Port Credit is golden.
For the first time in the history of the Mississauga Hockey League, one of its member associations has captured two provincial A hockey championships in the same year.
The Port Credit Storm won the all-Ontario Bantam A title Sunday afternoon at the Port Credit Arena, beating the Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds 2-1 in the championship game.
At around the same time, the Storm was celebrating in Temiskaming, where it beat Southpoint of Leamington 4-1 for the Ontario Hockey Federation Atom A title.
"That's incredible," said Bob Fletcher, president of the MHL. "They've (Port Credit) obviously got a pretty good program and I think it says a lot about our programs. What a way to finish off the season."
Anthony Sousa's goal with three minutes remaining in the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and gave the Storm the Bantam A championship.
"That was a total team effort," said Port Credit coach Tom Shields. "It was a great game and it came down to a 15-minute championship. I told our guys after the second period that whoever got the next goal would win it.
"I just can't put into words what this means to us. It was just a great effort by everyone."
After playing through a scoreless first period, the teams traded second-period goals to carry a 1-1 tie into the third. Matt Smyth opened the scoring for the Storm.
Port Credit faced a scary couple of minutes to start the third when it took back-to-back penalties, giving the Puckhounds a two-man advantage for 53 seconds. But Port Credit turned in some solid penalty killing to keep the game tied.
"Killing the five-on-three was a big boost," said Shields. "It gave us momentum because if we could hold them off being down two players, then we knew we could beat them playing even."
Port Credit, representing the Greater Toronto Hockey League in the tournament after winning the city A championship, advanced to the title game by beating Quinte West 4-3 in the semi-final Sunday morning. Temiskaming reached the final after beating Kitchener 7-0 in the other semi-final game.
Brett Ponting scored three times and Matthew Ferreira had the other for the Storm in the semi-final.
In Temiskaming, Elliott Sharpe scored a pair of goals and Calvin Gomes and Clark Wilson had one each to give the Storm its victory over Leamington.
The only other time a GTHL team has won a provincial A title was back in 1997-98 when Port Credit, known at the time as the Port Credit Huron, captured the Bantam A crown.
