2010-11 MHL Gate Fees (August 26, 2010)
![]() |
During the 2009-10 season, the Mississauga Hockey League requested feedback from the MHL membership regarding preferences of payment of Gate Fees or upfront inclusion as a component of the player's registration fee.
The process of requesting feedback also presented an opportunity to provide education regarding the purpose of Gate Fees and details of what those fees, versus registration fees, currently cover.
As a hockey parent (or player paying his/her own way), you've become accustomed to paying an annual Registration Fee at your local Association level and the $4.00 per person Arena Gate Fee at the MHL level. Each of these payments goes to different organizations and each is used for different expenditures to help ensure a successful hockey sesason.
Your Registration Fee, paid to your local Association, is used for practice ice, uniforms, pictures, banquets, coach training, player and coach insurance etc. It's used by YOUR local Association to make your player "game ready."
Your Arena Gate Fee, paid to the MHL, is used for game ice, referees, time-keepers, printing, trophies, and administrative costs associated with the MHL Office. The MHL requires this source of revenue in order to provide organized hockey games for MHL participants.
With this understanding of Gate Fees versus Registration Fees, accompanied by the feedback received by the 2009-10 Gate Fee Survey, the MHL will continue to review options regarding this issue specific to the feasibility of the Gate Fee. Once complete, an official strategy will be announced to the entire MHL membership. Moving forward, however, the MHL is required to continue with use of the Gate Fee for players and spectators during the 2010-11 season.
2010-11 Gate Fee Status
For the 2010-11 season, the MHL will be implementing an increase in the Gate Fee. This will be the first increase since 2005 when the ticket price was set at $4.00 with a commitment to hold this price for 3 years. In actuality, the MHL was able to hold the Gate Fee at this price for double the estimated time. Each season since then the average cost of the ice has increased by 3 - 5 %. This year the MHL is further impacted by the addition of the 8% HST. As a result of these continuing increases in costs the MHL can no longer hold its ticket price and is required to implement an increase to a $5.00 gate fee. Spectators who are 15 years of age and under and those who are 60 years of age and older continue to be granted free access to every MHL game.
Special Ticket Bundle Offer
In addition, a special price for "Ticket Bundles" has been set for the 2010-11 season. Patrons will be able to purchase 10 tickets for the price of 9 (cost of $45.00 for a savings of $0.50 per ticket). Ticket Bundles can be purchased during any MHL game from the MHL Ticket Sellers. Please be reminded, cash is the only form of payment that will be accepted by ticket sellers for ticket bundles (or individual tickets). The MHL is currently working on additional locations to purchase Ticket Bundles and will provide information regarding those locations in the near future.
2010-11 MHL Parent Guide
This guide has been produced by the Mississauga Hockey League (MHL) to assist parents in understanding how the League, its Area Associations and their teams operate - and to suggest what to look for when choosing an Association and/or team for your child to participate with. This guide has been developed to help veteran parents of hockey and newer parents to this great game with frequently asked questions from equipment to schedules.
